Obituary of Father André Lemelin

AVIS DE DÉCÈS – Père André Lemelin Prêtre du diocèse de St. Catharines C’est avec grande tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès du Père André Lemelin, survenu le 19 août 2016, à Welland General Hospital, à l’âge de 85 ans. Né le 10 août 1931, il était le fils de feu Andronic et de feue Fernande (née Bouchard). Il laisse dans le deuil sa sœur Christiane (feu Léo Nadeau), et son frère Conrad (Liliane Tisi); ses neveux et nièces : Marc, Michel, Yvan, Alain Nadeau, et Hélène Goulding (née Nadeau), ainsi que Anne-Marie Lemelin (et de feu Jean-Luc Lemelin). Avant d’être ordonné prêtre le 5 mai 1984 par Son Exc Mgr Thomas Fulton à l’église Sacré-Cœur, le Père Lemelin a assuré quelques professions : il fût professeur d’écoles secondaires francophones et anglophones à Welland et à Port Colborne; gérant de la Caisse Populaire de Port Colborne et traducteur pour la compagnie Eaton’s. En ce qui regarde son ministère pastoral, il a œuvré dans les paroisses suivantes : Our Lady of the Scapular, Niagara Falls; Paroisse Sacré-Cœur, Welland; St. Denis in St. Catharines; Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, Niagara Falls et à l’Immaculée-Conception, St. Catharines. Il prit sa retraite en 2004. Le corps sera exposé en chapelle ardente en l’église paroissiale Sacré-Cœur de Welland, mardi le 23 août, de 14h à 17h, et de 18h30 à 21h; et mercredi le 24 août, de 10h à 12h30; l’Office des Vêpres des défunts aura lieu mardi soir, le 23 août, à 19h. L’Eucharistie des funérailles sera célébrée mercredi, le 24 août, à 13h, et de là au cimetière Holy Cross pour l’inhumation. Son Exc. Mgr Luc Bouchard, évêque de Trois-Rivières, Qc, et cousin du Père Lemelin, présidera la cérémonie funèbre. En signe de sympathies, un don peut être versé au fond de la reconstruction des marches principales de l’église de la Paroisse Sacré-Cœur de Welland. 72 Empire, L3B 2L4 Father André Lemelin It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Father André Lemelin at the age of 85, on Aug 19, 2016 at the Welland General Hospital. He is survived by his sister Christiane (Nadeau) and his brother Conrad (Liliane Tisi). Before being ordained as a priest at Sacré-Coeur Parish on May 5, 1984 by Most Reverend Thomas Fulton, Fr Lemelin assumed a number of professions: he taught in French and English high schools in Welland and in Port Colborne; he was manager of the Caisse Populaire in Port Colborne. He also worked as a translator for Eaton’s. As a priest, he served the parishes of Our Lady of the Scapular, Niagara Falls; Paroisse du Sacre Coeur, Welland; St. Denis Parish, St. Catharines; Paroisse Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, Niagara Falls and Paroisse Immaculée-Conception, St. Catharines before retiring in 2004. A special thank you to the Plymouth Cordage Staff, to the Welland Hospital Staff and to Dr. Goswami for the excellent care Father André received in his time of need. The family will receive relatives and friends for Visitation at Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday August 23, from 2pm to 9pm and Wednesday August 24, from 10am to 12:30pm. A Funeral Mass will follow at 1pm. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery after the church service.
