Obituary of Jean-Paul Lemay

Décédé à l’hôpital de Welland, le 24 décembre 2016, sa femme bien-aimée à son chevet, Jean-Paul laisse dans le deuil sa femme Bernadette Belcourt, ses enfants René (Amy Luciani), Sylvie (Robert Chen), Jean-Marc (Anita Basilio) ; ses petits- enfants Brigitte, Jason, Bailey, Téo, Jean-Benoît et Alyssa ainsi que ses sœurs Jeannine et Rita (Louis Grenier). Il est prédécédé par sa sœur Cécile Blancher et son frère Jacques. Il sera manqué par ses beaux-frères et sœurs Richard Blancher, Madeleine Lemay, Audrey Belcourt, Lorraine Press, Marc et Pat Belcourt, Léonard et Claire Belcourt et Gérald Belcourt ainsi que par ses neveux et ses nièces. Originaire de Rockland, Jean-Paul compléta ses études à l’université d’Ottawa. Après plusieurs années d’enseignement dans le nord et l’est de l’Ontario, Jean-Paul s’est retrouvé à Welland ou il a enseigné 23 ans dans les écoles françaises. Enseignant dévoué, il a marqué la vie d’un grand nombre d’élèves en voyant le positif, le potentiel et le meilleur dans chaque personne. Entraîneur enthousiaste, il a passé de nombreuses heures à former une myriade d’équipes sportives. Chrétien convaincu, il s’est toujours dévoué à l’épanouissement de la communauté à Welland. Il a été membre engagé, président et membre du conseil d’administration de plusieurs associations : le club Champlain, la Société St Jean-Baptiste, l’Association des Enseignants Franco-Ontarien, le Club Renaissance Sacré-Coeur, le Conseil paroissial de pastoral de l’église Sacré-Cœur, l’OPÉCO et de Family and Children Services de Niagara. En particulier, il faut noter son travail avec le Club Richelieu. Comme membre, ancien président ou comme secrétaire du Club, il a oeuvré tout particulièrement pour le développement et l’opération de la Résidence Richelieu. Joueur de tennis et de hockey enthousiastes, il savait créer un esprit sportif autour de lui. Durant ses dernières années, Jean-Paul fut frappé de démence et son déclin fut difficile à vivre pour sa famille et ses amis. Ses qualités d’époux et de père, aimant, bienveillant et chaleureux furent enfouies sous le voile de sa maladie. Souvent seulement ses yeux et son sourire indiquaient qu’il nous reconnaissait. Enfin, le Seigneur l’a appelé à un monde meilleur. La famille recevra parents et amis au Salon Funéraire Welland, 827 rue Main Est, jeudi le 29 décembre de 18 h à 21 h. Les funérailles auront lieu vendredi le 30 décembre à 11 h à l’Église du Sacré-Cœur (72 rue Empire). With his beloved wife at his bedside, Jean-Paul died December 24th at the Welland Hospital. He leaves behind his wife Bernadette (Belcourt), his children René (Amy Luciani), Sylvie (Robert Chen) and Jean-Marc (Anita Basilio) ; his grand-children Brigitte, Jason, Bailey, Téo, Jean-Benoit and Alyssa as well as his sisters Jeannine and Rita (Louis Grenier). He is predeceased by his sister Cécile Blancher and his brother Jacques. He will be missed by his brothers and sisters in law: Richard Blancher, Madeleine Lemay, Audrey Belcourt, Lorraine Press, Marc and Pat Belcourt, Léonard and Claire Belcourt and Gérald Belcourt as well as by his many nieces and nephews. Born in Rockland, Jean-Paul completed his studies at the University of Ottawa. After several years of teaching in Eastern and Northern Ontario, he moved to Welland and taught for 23 years within the French language school system. He was a devoted teacher who saw the best in every student. He was an enthusiastic coach who trained a myriad of school sports’ teams. Personally, he loved playing tennis and hockey and was a good sport and made playing fun for all. Jean-Paul was actively involved in his community and participated in many committees, boards and clubs – often as president or secretary. Club Champlain, the St-Jean-Baptiste Society, the AEFO (teachers’ association), Club Renaissance, the Sacré-Cœur church pastoral committee, l’OPECO and Family and Children’s Services of Niagara are all organisations that benefitted from his volunteer efforts. Of note, he was a member of the Club Richelieu for 45 years and spent many hours working to develop and help operate the Résidence Richelieu. The Lord finally took him to a better place. Dementia had slowly extinguished his bright light and spirit and the unrelenting decline was difficult. In the end, his eyes and smiles were the only occasional signs of recognition. Visitation will be held on Thursday December 29th from 6-9pm at the Welland Funeral Home (827 Main St East). Funeral services will take place at Église Sacré-Cœur (72 Empire St.) on Friday December 30th at 11am.
