Obituary of Nicholas Petrachenko
Born in Welland, Ontario on September 19, 1945, Nick passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 21, 2024
Nick, with his wife of 58 years Virginia (née Somogyi), shared great pride in raising two children and partnering in the devoted support of their grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Survived by his son Barry Petrachenko (Lisa) and daughter Tara Groulx (Joedy), grandsons Garrett Petrachenko, Cooper and Trent Groulx, brothers Lonny (Rosemary), Michael (Sandra) and Merv (Norma) Petrachenko, nieces Jenna (Chad) and Savannah Petrachenko, nephews Dylan (Steph), Adrian, Julian (Katie) and Maverick (Amanda) Petrachenko and great nephews Bentley and Liam Petrachenko. Pre-deceased by his mother Helen, father Nick Senior, and sister-in-law Monique Coutu.
Nick had an artistic flair. In his youth he could usually be found building model cars, Ukranian dancing, playing the accordion, or rocking the high school talent show with a rendition of the Beatles “I Saw Her Standing There”. He was very handy around the house, loved dancing with his wife, attending concerts and taking in live performances.
Most of all, “The Hawk” was drawn to sports - first as a standout athlete at Welland South School and Welland High, and later as a player on local softball and baseball teams. He was also an umpire, and coached several minor basketball and baseball teams including high school and national champions. Nick loved to watch all sports and supported local teams with a genuine enthusiasm. He was blessed with a terrific group of buddies who took in games together, became part of his extended family, and whose kindness and thoughtful support in recent years served as a touching tribute to their bond.
“Nick from Welland” loved to travel, never missed an opportunity to interact with people, and possessed a unique ability to make people smile whenever they crossed paths.
We miss him.
Heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff at Foyer Richelieu. Donations can be made in memory of Nick to the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region or Foyer Richelieu Welland.
