Obituary of Bernard O'Keefe
Bernard John O’Keefe, 90, of Welland ON, died peacefully on April 7, 2024, at his residence, Woodlands of Sunset.
He was born in Toronto, ON, in 1934 to Francis and Bridget O’Keefe.
Bernard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth, siblings James (Irene), Miriam, Noreen, Margaret, Elizabeth (Patrick) and Leo (Lenora). Uncle Bernard will be dearly missed by three generations of beloved nieces and nephews.
Bernard will always be remembered for his sharp wit, infectious laugh and the way that he had a story for every conversation. He was a man who truly lived a full and unique life. In his younger days, Bernard was an avid sports enthusiast, even earning an invitation to the Cleveland Indians Baseball Training Camp. Later, he joined the Catholic priesthood, where he traveled the world learning and teaching. During this time he became skilled in French and German. He received a personal invitation to the White House by President John F. Kennedy and met Saint Mother Teresa. After leaving the priesthood, Bernard embarked on various careers, including serving as the Managing Editor of Harlequin Romance Novels, among other business ventures. Still, one of his proudest accomplishments was sharing 49 beautiful years of marriage with his wife Elizabeth.
Bernard will be greatly missed. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. The family extends special thanks to the incredible staff of Woodlands of Sunset for their excellent care and friendship, particularly Val, during Bernard’s final years.
A private ceremony will be held to lay Bernard to rest beside Elizabeth, at Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines, ON. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to WELLAND FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE.
