Ian Smith

Obituary of Ian DW Smith

My kind-hearted, honorable and loving father passed away on the evening of May 2, 2026.

Born in Woodhaven, Manitoba, graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1946. He worked at the Research Station as a horticulturalist in Alberta, and went on to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories as a horticulturalist which included a work trip down the MacKenzie River to the Arctic. He then went on to Philadelphia and worked for the Burpee Seed Co. After 1 1/2 yrs., he returned to Canada and accepted a job working as an agrologist at the Horticultural Research Center in Vineland until he retired in 1987.

Ian met the woman of his dreams, Gladys, and they enjoyed life to the fullest! Then their daughter Linda was born, and made their life complete.

Ian loved gardening, music, reading and the numerous countries that he traveled around the world! But, most of all, his devotion to family! His best times were family get-togethers, Sunday dinners at Linda's each week, and the Wed. afternoon drives she took him on all around Niagara, and the many picnics.

We all loved listening to his stories and experiences from his travel around the world!

Ian leaves behind a legacy of love, joy and under yielding spirit that will dearly be missed by Linda (Lawrence); grandson, Jason (Lauren); granddaughter, Kristen, (Ed); and great-grandson, 'Cutie' Carter. Also Gary and Irene, Barry, (Pat) and many others including staff and friends at Cobblestone.

A big thank you to the staff at Cobblestone for their love and care and to the NF Hospital, (stroke unit), for their support and special care.

Donations can be made to Toronto Sick Children's Hospital or to the charity of your choice.

Cremation has taken place per dad's wishes, and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.
