Obituary of Dorothy Colley
Dorothy May Colley ( née Newton)
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Dorothy May Colley, on March 29, 2026, at the age of 91. While our family grieves this profound loss, we take comfort in knowing she is finally at peace.
A loving wife of 56 years to the late Len Colley. She will be forever in the hearts of her children Vicki, Patti Nickel (Marc Plouffe), Karen Charette (Dave Taylor), and Rob (Michelle Richard). Deeply missed by her brother Barry (Judy) Newton and her grandchildren Barry (Christina), Jason (Anna), Jennifer (Dennis), Bradley, Whitney (Kyle), and Tanner (Lyndsey). She was a cherished great‑grandmother to Allie, Dario, Mia, Lana, and Nika. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Edna Newton.
Dorothy was born and raised in Cobourg, Ontario. After meeting Len, the two chose to make their home in Welland, Ontario. A self‑taught knitter, Dorothy became known for her remarkable skill, creating hundreds of beautifully crafted sweaters. Her passion for the craft led her to begin teaching knitting and crochet classes, eventually opening her own small shop, the Spinning Wheel. She also worked as a school crossing-guard, a role she cherished for the chance it gave her to connect with the children in her community. Whenever she sat down, her hands were rarely still—knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, or working on some new creative project. The many pieces she made over the years will always be treasured as the works of art they are.
What we will miss most are the simple, meaningful moments—sitting with Mom at the kitchen table, sharing time, conversation, and comfort. We are forever grateful for the dear friends who enriched Mom’s life, especially Maggie, whose kindness, love, and unwavering support meant so much.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the WELLAND FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 827 East Main St., Welland, ON. Honouring Dorothy’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held to honour Dorothy’s life.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched. In honour of Dorothy, her late husband Len, and all those affected by this devastating illness, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be sincerely appreciated. Contributions to a charity of your choice are equally welcome.
