Obituary of Ralph Harold Gater

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ralph Gater on October 24, 2025, at the age of 83, at his home.

Ralph will be deeply missed by his loving wife Colombe (née Lavallée), his son Dan Gater (Theresa), and his daughter Debbi Tennant (Brandon). He was a proud grandfather to James (Alyssa), Grace (Codey), Merissa (Carlos), and Jessica (Kyle). He will be remembered by Colombe's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as, by Theresa Gater’s children and grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Phyliss Gater, and his sister Dianne Scott.

Ralph held a special place in his heart for his close friends at the Legion, where he shared countless memories. He loved family gatherings and camping trips, cherishing every moment spent surrounded by those he loved most. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he enjoyed NASCAR, fishing with his son, and especially golfing. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, so much so that he even got the Legion involved to support his granddaughter Grace’s Olympic dreams.

A devoted father, Ralph became involved in Boy Scouts and coaching to spend more time with Dan. He rarely missed his grandchildren’s ball games, often volunteering as an umpire and cheering them on from the sidelines.

Ralph made a lasting imprint on the lives of everyone who knew him. His kindness, dedication, and love for family will be remembered forever.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Welland Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 827 East Main St., Welland, ON. On Friday, October 31st from 10:00-11:00 a.m., with a chapel service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Ralph’s memory.
