Obituary of Michael McCumber
Michael McCumber passed away on February 1, 2025, with his significant other Stephannie Thornton by his side, at the Stabler Centre Hospice Niagara in St.Catharines. He fought valiantly for over a year combatting cancer. Michael is survived by son, Bradley McCumber; daughter, Brianne Wheaton; three thriving grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou White; niece, Jennifer Gosselin (Dan); Grand-niece, Celia Gosselin; Stephannie’s son, David Thornton who shared a close relationship with Michael, as well as David’s son, Conner; and last but not least, our two "furry girls” Bella-Jane and Ella-Rae with whom Michael shared a heartfelt bond. Michael was predeceased by his parents Clifford and Geraldine (née Conway) McCumber; beloved sister Linda; brother, Bill; adored nephew, Christopher White; and brother-in-law Paul White.
After retiring early from General Motors, Michael’s experience with the OPP paved the way for a new chapter as Chief of Security at the Niagara Falls Hilton. He was a charismatic, outgoing, and resilient man, always ready with a sense of humor and a welcoming smile. Michael had a remarkable voice and loved taking the mic at Karaoke nights. One of the moments that still stands out for me is when he sang Garth Brooks' "The Dance"—he captured the emotion of the song in a way that left an impression. He was determined to sing Toby Keith’s “Don’t Let the Old Man In” once he overcame his personal struggles, and when his voice returned, it would have been a triumphant moment.
A sincere thank you and deep gratitude to Paramed Coordinator Kasey Sadora and Nurse Practitioner Arrie Randall for their full commitment to team Michael and their unwavering advocacy. I also want to express my appreciation to Palliative RNs Iran and Tanya for their exceptional care, encouragement, and compassion, as well as to the PSWs for their unwavering support and kindness.
A heartfelt thank you to Palliative Care physician Dr. Kahn for your invaluable "home visits"—a true blessing for patients too weak to attend office visits. The region is in need of more specialists with your compassion and dedication. My sincere gratitude also goes to Tannis Laramee at Hospice Niagara for understanding our difficult situation and for listening to the urgent concerns expressed by Kasey Sadora and Arrie Randall. The care Michael received during his final five days was phenomenal, and I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you.
